Port Valdez is currently two cities. One has been here a long time ago, but in 1964 on Good Friday almost disappeared due to devastating earthquake. A Tsunami wave destroyed almost everything. The second City was built after that.
The original Valdez, to which still lead milestones, is about 4 miles away. The beginning of this city was not successful till the gold rush. During the gold rush the town was flooded by nearly 7,000 enthusiasts who desire to get rich quickly and easily. Developing of this new Valdez is mainly related to oil trade. In the 70th 20th century Trans- Alaskan pipeline came here. With this arrival, the city began expand and now up to 4,500 people live here. In 1989 there was a huge ecological disaster. Exxon Valdez was an original name of the oil tanker, which March 24 of 1989 wrecked Alaska's coast in Prince William bay. It was one of the worst environmental disasters caused by man.
