The McCarthy road starts near Cooper River and ends near the Kennicot River. It is about 59 miles long. The longer part of the road was built instead of the former railway line Copper River and Northwestern Railway. The McCarthy Road, what is now called, is part of a monumental building. The rails and sleepers were mostly removed and saved. The road was opened in 1960 and since then has been slightly modified. However, it is still very dusty, very narrow and requires a lot of attention especially while turning. I recommend a spare tire and tire repair kit. It's supposedly the worst road in Alaska.
